First off there are three types of bunkers; fairway, green side and waste bunkers. Fairway bunkers are usually found on the side of par fours and par fives but sometimes course designers plop them in the middle. I’m very much against putting bunkers two close to the fairways when the fairway can already be 15 yards wide depending on the course. Secondly there are green side bunkers which usually guard greens on all types of holes, but they may be most effective on par threes when one shot is coming from one general location. Bunkers are placed on most par threes guarding certain shots into the green and will snag wayward shots as well. Finally waste bunkers are different then regular bunkers as they don’t need to be raked after use, but it’s common courtesy to do so. They aren’t maintained as well as regular bunkers are.
